Rest Day

If you follow my blog regularly I'm sure you've noticed that exercise is a huge part of our lives, it's important both for physical and mental health in dogs and humans.

But one thing to keep in mind is that dogs just like us - also need to rest.

Tomorrow i'll be hiking the South Sister located in Oregon, with Dante and my best girlfriend ever /soon to be family! She's marrying my cousin!

We'll be starting at Devil's Lake Trail Head. Round trip the hike is 12 miles which will take the day to complete.

Last summer Dante did a lot of running with my mom while she trained for a marathon, the furthest he went with her was 11 miles and boy was he tired!

This will be different though - we're talking lots of elevation gains, and he'll be carrying a pack. Plus he hasn't done any serious long distance since last summer and although he's in tip top shape this trip means today is a rest day for him, myself included.

My handsome boy!

Last night we exercised both pups in the field near our home - Dante fetched his tug toy and played "swing the dog" with dad until he was super tired while Ziva chased her ball. This morning we did a nice long walk to stretch their legs before breakfast and Dante will probably get some puppy play time with his sister in our yard this afternoon before we leave.

The hubby will have Ziva to himself the whole weekend while we're out of town so she may get to play tonight, but Dante will just go on another nice long walk this evening with me before we begin our hike bright and early at the "butt crack of dawn".

Remember to care for your pups before you go on a long hiking expedition. Just like an athlete before a competition you want both yourself and your dog to be rested, well fed, and hydrated before beginning.

Do a gear check! Dante will be carrying his REI backpack so that he can haul his own water and treats, he's also going to be wearing his Ruffwear Grip Trex boots. Make sure everything is clean if necessary, and ready to go.

  6. I'm going to have to check out those boots! When we go hiking it's not a 12 mile hike but we do miles for sure. I bet Barry would appreciate his tootsies being protected with those!
