Dante vs. Yellow Jacket

Can You Guess Who Won?

Yup the yellow jacket did. What a nasty creature they are!
There we were, minding our own business.

Snapping a few pictures and enjoying the scenery, when boom! Dante started jumping sideways.

It was just thankfully just one bee, and he didn't have much of a reaction other than some swelling.

But guess what I carry in my pack? A bite and sting kit!

I picked up a couple of these kits because we were moving into a rattlesnake area. And while I know how to use it and have done a few practice runs I have never actually used it.

It worked great!

Dz Dog Dad was surprised that I was able to get suction on Dante over his fur, generally you want to shave the area first. But I definitely got a good seal over the sting, and voila! No more lump on the poor boy.

If your dog gets stung watch them carefully, some dogs are just as allergic as humans are to bees. And a sting in the mouth or throat can constrict breathing and may need a veterinarian trip.

The Call Of Nature.

Frisco Dog Waste Bags

When you gotta go, you gotta go.
We've been doing tons of hiking, and being an advocate for taking care of the environment we practice "Leave No Trace".

Leave No Trace - means packing out whatever we pack in. This includes doggy doo, one of my least favorite dog related jobs. But somebody has got to do it! And that is where Frisco comes in handy.

Heat Exhaustion In Dogs

Heat Exhaustion In Dogs.

Dante and Ziva love living in Southern Oregon, the issue we've been having though is temperature. We aren't outside enough to have really adapted yet, so we run fast between air conditioned destinations and from the car to the river.

Recently a friend of mine experienced heat exhaustion with one of her dogs so I thought it would be a good time to address the issue.

Wings.

Gone to the birds.

We recently visited the High Desert Museum located in Bend, OR. What great place! My favorite of course was the raptor center and we had to see their show while we were their. If you ever have a chance to visit this great place you should go! Raptors that are injured in the wild and can no longer survive on their own are taken here for rehabilitation and to help educate the public.

This gorgeous Golden Eagle for example was accidentally hit by a car, he has been rehabilitated with loving care and since he can no longer fly more than short stretches, has joined the High Desert Museum's Raptor program to help educate the public about habitat protection and to introduce people to a gorgeous native species that many people otherwise don't think much about.

Most people recognize the Bald Eagle because of it's national status, but the Golden Eagle is North America's largest bird of prey and can dive up to 150 mph!

Other fun facts?
- These birds mate for life and love to nest in cliff sides.

- Females laying anywhere from 1 - 4 eggs that the male helps to sit on an incubate.

- They like to eat fish, birds, small mammals such as ground squirrels and rabbits, but they've also been known to take down small deer!

Another favorite bird of mine that we saw was a Barn Owl, people need to be educated that when they use poisonous baits on rats and mice they affect their local raptor population. Barn Owls and other raptors eat the poisoned mouse/rat and then also die.

19 More Days!!

The Final Countdown!

Cue music! It's the final countdown on our property!

If all goes according to plan, and so far NOTHING has gone according to plan...
Then we will close on our property in 19 more days!

Please keep us in your thoughts and or prayers!
We're hoping for a fast close so that we can move onto our new property, and then start breaking ground in September on our dream home.

Shake it Up - Unconventional Training

Shake it Up!
Unconventional Training

This move really shook up our routine, however at this point we've figured out a great new way to include training back into our daily lives - and life is finally starting to feel normal again. I'm back in the gym getting in at least two hard workouts a week, my new goal for that is to start working out three to four days a week again instead of just two.

Dante and Ziva are getting at least two running days in when we go to grandma's house, she has fences and grass rather than just burrs, thorny spiked plant life, and poison oak.
And if it's really hot we're hitting the river!

New routines, means new ways to train. Moving to Southern Oregon means we are dealing with heat that we've never had to deal with before. Exercise either must involve swimming or be in the early morning, or when the sun has gone down in the evening - recently though it hasn't been cooling off in the evenings so that's out!  Click the Link to Read More!
