Petsmart & Pit Bull Type Dogs

Big Heads & Big Hearts.

This has been on my mind a lot recently, but I've been waiting to write this post I guess because I'm torn.

So if you would lend me an ear.  Here is my dilemma...

We're all ears!!
Petsmart (North America's largest brick and mortar pet store) recently purchased, as it turns out has about 50% market share of the online pet food market. To be honest this was a really good decision on Petsmart's behalf, to purchase Chewy. But was it a good thing for Chewy? And is it a good thing for us?

As it turns out, Petsmart does not have a very bully friendly store policy. This is straight from their website.

"We CANNOT accept dogs of the "BULLY BREED" CLASSIFICATION..including American Pit Bull Terriers, Miniature Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Bull Dogs, Bull Terriers or mixed breeds that have the appearance or characteristics of one of these breeds."

So...wait... let me get this straight. All "bully breed type" dogs are excluded from daycamp? Why? Because somehow the shape of their skull, and general look makes them dangerous or unpredictable somehow? What about mutts? Oh right... their lawyer speak took care of that issue by saying, "mixed breeds that have the appearance or characteristics" because of course people are great at identifying dogs. Find the Pit Bull Test   In many different studies it has come out more and more that humans are terrible at identifying breeds, in one study done in 2009 - 20 mixed breed dogs were DNA tested to see how their visual identification compared to their DNA analysis. Their was little agreement, in fact only 4 of the dogs were correctly identified. And sadly, many shelters label dogs as "pit bull type" when they don't know what the breed of the dog is.

"Pit Bull" or "Pit Bull Type" dogs are MUTTS.
Mixed breeds, whatever your preferred term is. "Pit Bull" is not a breed. The term "pit bull" just means, blocky head, short hair, muscular body. It's a stereo type and a way to be prejudiced against a very large population of DIFFERENT breeds, and mixed breeds of dogs.  Boxers, Cane Corso's, American Bulldogs, etc... are all considered "pit bull" type dogs and they are all VERY different breeds.

Ziva (American Pit Bull Terrier), Dante (Boxer Mix), "Pit Bull Type" American Bulldog mixed breed.
Petsmart's Policy is Discriminatory & Not Based On Facts or Science.
Discrimination is wrong.
Millions of "pit bull" type dogs are killed in shelters every year because of how they look, not because of anything they have done. They are feared by some people, and some judge them based on myth and superstition. Being born looking a certain way doesn't mean you are automatically AGGRESSIVE or DANGEROUS. That's like saying "all women" are incapable of working on cars, or "all men" are terrible nurturers. It's amazing how with science, studies, and the ability to easily access information many people just buy into myths and ignorant hatred.

Petsmart apparently thinks that all bully breeds are inherently aggressive.

Please notice the "dangerous pitbull" chasing the large white dog.
Yes, that would be Ziva at Doggy Daycare while I was finishing up my Bachelors Degree.

Why Do I Care So Much About Doggy Daycare?
Doggy daycare saved us back when I was finishing my Bachelor's degree. At the time, Dz Dad was working full time while I was going to school and working a part time job. We needed help! And I couldn't leave the dogs for 8-10 hour days and no potty breaks.
We found a great local doggy daycare near my college campus, so on the way to school I'd drop of the pups, and on my way home I would pick them up. It was an awesome experience for all of us, allowing the dogs to socialize with big dogs, little dogs, old dogs, young dogs...and the best part? Dante and Ziva were EXHAUSTED when they got home so I didn't have to exercise them on those days. I also loved that I could check in on the webcams with my code to see how the dogs were doing, and the trainers used positive training methods and calming techniques with the dogs - keeping dogs in groups based on energy level and natural play groups rather than size or breed.

Where Does That Leave Us?
Well, we love but don't love Petsmart and their anti bully breed policies and thus we do not shop at Petsmart.

Right now though is the best time to launch another campaign to see if Petsmart is willing to change it's outdated stance against bully breeds. Maybe Chewy can help in this endeavor?

As advertisors for Chewy we'd like to know that our dogs are loved by Petsmart too. The idea that bullies are "different" or "more dangerous" than other dogs has been widely dis-proven by science and is ignorant, superstitious, and outdated thinking.

Chicken Skewers!!

Pet 'n Shape
Chik 'n Skewers Review

"We were sent these Pet 'n Shape Chik 'n Skewers in exchange for an honest review. Dz Dogs only supports brands and products that we feel are relevant to our readers. This blog contains no affiliate links, all thoughts and opinions are our own."

Always on the lookout for long lasting chews for Dante and Ziva, we jumped at the chance to sample them for an honest review!

Literally jumped!

And then politely begged when they realized I don't reward jumping behavior.

"Please mama!"
What We Liked About Pet 'n Shape Chik 'n Skewers?
These chicken skewers only have a couple ingredients, we liked the high protein content, and they contain NO artificial ingredients/additives/or colors. You can also see the meaty chicken fibers when you open up the packaging, which I thought was pretty cool.

Made from all natural dehydrated chicken breast fillets and natural beef hide, these treats were easy to eat and easily digestible. And unlike certain treats which are super stinky, I really couldn't smell these when the dogs were gnawing happily on them.

Are They A Long Lasting Treat?
When it comes to any sort of toy or treat I'm always skeptical when something says, "long lasting". Dante and Ziva are dedicated professional chewers, and nothing lasts long with the two of them working away. I think these treats made it all of three to five minutes max! Ziva is on the faster side of eating treats, while Dante likes to slowly work on his.

Overall we really liked these treats! I think most average chewers would probably enjoy these for closer to 10 minutes thanks to the addition of the natural beef hide center.

But if you're looking for a long lasting treat for a professional chewer you'll have to join us as we continue on in our quest for the ultimate long lasting chew treat!

This Girl & Her Ball.

In case you didn't know, this girl here is obsessed...with tennis balls. I think probably more than half of my photos of her include a ball in her mouth or nearby somewhere!

A Girl's Best Friend.

Oh man! Spring in Southern Oregon is soo much different than the Willamette Valley. One of the things that's different is the rain, while we do get rain and people complain about it - it at least doesn't rain all day for a week straight like it did when we lived in the valley.

Here it at least stops every couple hours so you can get things done, and we might have a day with blue skies for a few hours and then rain for a few hours. It's awesome! And we've definitely been taking advantage of getting outside.

100% All-Natural Pork Rolls for Dogs

"We were sent Bravo! 100% All-Natural Pork Roll's  in exchange for an honest review. Dz Dogs only supports brands and products that we feel are relevant to our readers. This blog contains no affiliate links, all thoughts and opinions are our own."

Recently we were discussing the issue of rawhide because many pet owners have never heard of the dangers and need to be educated.  Dangers of Rawhide HERE.

But have you heard of the safer alternatives? We were recently contacted by Bravo! to do an honest review of their 100% All-Natural Pork Rolls and they were a huge hit with Dante and Ziva!

I barely got any pictures of Dante, he promptly thanked me for it and took off running to eat his in privacy away from Ziva.

Rawhide Is Not Worth The Risk

You see it everywhere, and almost always on sale at your local pet store.

Not only is it Not Natural, but it's also Not Safe.

My veterinarian explained it to me once by saying, the way it goes in is how it comes out. Eeeeewww! Rawhide doesn't digest well and poses a serious risk of internal blockage and chocking. According to a study done by the Journal of Animal Science -
"Gastric digestibility of rawhide chews was low at six hours (7.6%) and slowly increased over time, reaching a maximum of 41.6% at 18 hours."

18 hours and still not even halfway digested! Which is surprising when you think about it because it's a by-product of the beef meat industry right? Actually that's only a partial truth. It's more closely related to the leather industry than it is beef and A LOT of it comes from China.

To put the whole digestion issue into perspective for you:

But never fear, Detective Dante is here!

Right away I was hot on the trail of the little thief, the nose knows and mine is never wrong.

What's In A Name? - Part II

What's In a Name?
Part II - Ziva

What's a good name for a velvety, pibble princess?

When it came time that we were ready to adopt a second dog Dz Dad and I knew we wanted a little girl who would complement Dante's rough and rambunctious personality (Ziva's Adoption Story HERE).

Her original name was Honey, which was nice enough but a little to cliche for us personally. Seeing her for the first time I remember looking at her as the rescue worked walked her over to us and thinking she looked like a ray of golden sunshine.

What's In A Name?

I've been thinking about this recently, it came up in conversation on Facebook I think and it got me wondering.

DzDad and I believe names have power and should be chosen individually based on our dog's personality traits. We don't like cliche names, or stupid names that people give their dogs to make themselves seem more tough. For example, Dante's original name was Diesel....I hated the name Diesel and we knew it had to go! Dante isn't a junkyard dog, or some wanna be tough guys dog, he's a smooshable, kissabull, snuggly mama's boy. And he's amazing.

Why did we chose the name Dante?

Recently we were contacted by Bravo Pet Food to try out their Complete Freeze Dried Dog Food, having never tried Bravo before we were super excited about it! Look at how pretty and colorful it is in it's dried form.

While we don't feed raw food, we do love freeze dried options especially since we want to get into some overnight backpacking with the dogs this upcoming summer. Freeze dried is light and easy to pack for hiking purposes.

Primal Pork Liver Munchies

Primal Pork Liver Munchies
Freeze-dried Dog & Cat Treats

"Their are no affiliate links on this blog, we do not get paid for getting you to click on anything."

This month Chewy sent us some yummy freeze dried pork liver treats to review!

Hmmmmm Pork!

Even though we have been living fence free for six months now, I still have problems trusting Dante and Ziva. Well...lets be honest...mostly Dante. He's my fearless, adventuresome boy who thinks the whole world is his giant play pen waiting to be discovered!  Thankfully he doesn't run away, but what he does do is explore. Sometimes a little to far.  So when we're outside working on the property (where the work never ends) Dz Dad and I have taken to carrying treats in our pockets and calling Dante back and forth the whole time we work.

Here Kitty Kitty

Snowy Adventures.

Time to get outside!

Last weekend the weather was gorgeous and between the restless hubby, and cabin feverish dogs we decided to set out and find ourselves a new adventure!

Such a gorgeous day to waste inside, so we packed up the dogs and headed out for some fresh air!

We recently discovered a National Forest Service road not to far from where we live, it was perfect for a day trip. The only hard part of this little trail was the snow, frozen solid from all of the sun and freezing temperatures it was like walking on ice rather than snow.

But we weren't deterred! This was the perfect hike for us to test out our day hiking packs and practice carrying for emergency situations like getting stuck in the woods overnight. It's always good to have a plan in place. Our packs include things like a drinking water filter, hand warming packets, fire starting supplies, knife/leatherman, emergency blankets, etc...  that'll be a different post entirely, we're hoping to get into overnight camping when the weather warms up!

Ding Dong Puppy!

Ding Dong Puppy

So we were out playing, taking advantage of the break in the weather and the dogs decided to do zoomies!

It was so funny! Dante runs with his head up high ears and tail flying behind him like a maniac, Ziva chases with her tail curled into a cute "C" shape.

Dante then darted down the hill and up the driveway, Ziva hot on his tail decided to take a short cut!!! And BOOM!

Ding dong puppy fell in the pond! I think she thought it was solid because of the snow on top.
Needless to say, playtime was over while we dried her off!

Time to Hibernate.

Done. Finished, fini, finito, terminado, acabado..

Recently snow levels in our area broke records, in fact this was the most snowfall we've seen in a 24 hour period in our area since December of 1919!

At first it was fun.

But now it's just ridiculous!  My poor neighbors were snowed in for a week and a half because their driveway is so steep (we checked in with them and they were doing fine) and then just when we thought we were getting a break in the weather - forecast said rain and 40's... we get this! #weathermandon'tknowwhathestalkingabout

Day 5 of Snowpocalypse

Dear Diary,

Sunday Day 1 of our Snowpocalypse - The sky has gone mad and is producing tiny little flakes of frozen-ness. My toes are cold.

Monday Day 2 of Snowpocalypse - Apparently it's our long lost friend the snow! We love the snow!

However things are looking rather bleak, mom is out of wine and it's snowed all day and still isn't stopping!

Tuesday Day 3 of the Snowpocalypse - We had a break in the snow so mom escaped! She said we were nearly out of doggy food, wouldn't that have been horrible?! So off to the store she went (without us) to get our food and some other grocery stuff. I know she came back with salad, I definitely do not want to eat that!
