Meet Me Under the Mistletoe!

Fresh Kisses!
"We were sent Merrick Fresh Kisses in exchange for an honest review. Dz Dogs only supports products that we feel are relevant to our readers. This blog contains no affiliate links, all thoughts and opinions are our own."

We're getting into the Christmas spirit over here! While it should be mentioned that mistletoe is toxic and we don't allow it in the house, we still like to pretend and of course not be left out of puppy kisses.

Step one to a fresh kiss - clean that mouth!

We received Merrick "Fresh Kisses" in size small, which is actually my preference. I have gotten these treats in the past but with power chewers like Dante and Ziva it doesn't seem to matter big or little they are devoured in about 10 seconds. So for us the size small actually lasts longer and I hand them out like treats.

According to Merrick, the unique shape of these treats makes it so that as they break apart, they in turn clean between your dog's teeth. I'm not so sure about that claim, however I definitely noticed an immediate freshness of breath.  Ziva especially has bad breath for some reason, we've had her checked out by our vet who says her teeth look good. She is due for a cleaning but I just haven't gotten around to scheduling that yet (we have a wonderful company that does drug free cleanings that we love!).

"Can I has it now please?"

What we loved?
Made in the USA without corn/soy no artificial ingredients/colors or preservatives.

These treats smell great! Even to me! They are minty fresh and the dogs go nuts when I open the bag.

Thanks to the shape these treats didn't crumble in the bag, they were easy to handle and didn't leave any bad smells or oils on your hands.

I also love that the bag reseals!

What have we noticed?
I've been handing these treats out consistently about once a week and I have definitely noticed an improvement in Ziva's breath. She's absolutely kissable now! And Dante who had no bad breath to begin with is even more irresistibly smoochable.

Stella & Chewy's Freeze Dried Beef Hearts!

Stella & Chewy's
Freeze-Dried Beef Hearts!
"We were sent Stella & Chewy's in exchange for an honest review. Dz Dogs only supports products that we feel are relevant to our readers. This blog contains no affiliate links, all thoughts and opinions are our own."

This month Chewy sent us some new treats to try with the dogs, and being that we were having Thanksgiving at my mom's house I thought it would be fun to save them and take the treats with us so the dogs would have something special on Thanksgiving.

But alas, we have some bad news about this treat....

But first, take a good look at this face. This is Belle, she doesn't often make appearances on the Dz Dog blog but she is definitely more dog than cat.  She likes to play fetch with things like string, and fuzzy treat balls I pick up for her (and she brings them back). She's super social, very snuggly - in fact she sleeps on top of me every night! She is vocal, easy to handle, loves to be brushed, and she is a little bit of a mischief maker.

Turns out she wanted the treats for herself.

That's our best guess anyways.

I came home, the bag had been knocked off of the shelf. Clearly scratched and clawed by none other than a cat...and then demolished into teensy tinsy little shreds by - none other than the dogs.

Did they like them?

Evidence says that they were IRRESISTIBLE!

What did I like about them? Apparently these treats treat your pets for you! No more having to hand out treats.  Hahahahahaha!  Not handling them, my hands didn't get dirty, and I didn't have to smell anything which is nice since being pregnant I'm super sensitive to odors right now.

And they only had one ingredient; Beef Heart.

Thank you Chewy.com for the treats!
The four legged animals of the house were big fans!
My apologies, silly me didn't think to take a picture of the demolished bag.

Trick or Treat!!

Trick or Treat
Castor & Pollux Grain Free
Grass-Fed Lamb, Carrot, & Apple Stew!

"We were sent Castor & Pollux in exchange for an honest review. Dz Dogs only supports products that we feel are relevant to our readers. This blog contains no affiliate links, all thoughts and opinions are our own."

This year our howl-o-ween was a little different, last year was our first year in our new house and we realized that living in the country means we no longer have any trick or treaters! I find this to be a bit of a bummer because I always loved seeing the little kids in their cute costumes and we used it as a training exercise for the pups in regards to the doorbell.

Since the kiddos don't come all the way out where we live we ended up just staying home and treating ourselves. I pretty much blame it all on the new arrival.... Chocolate for mama? Yep, baby gets what baby wants! Apple cider for mama? Yep, baby gets what baby wants!  We should find out gender at my next appointment!

Anywho..back to our fun treats.

This year we stayed in and the dogs who were thoroughly worn out from playing with their puppy cousin, were happy to oblige and just enjoy being spoiled.

Trick or Treat! Smell my...stew?

Castor & Pollux Grain Free Grass-Fed Lamb, Carrot & Apple Stew, smells great! Completely unoffensive to human noses whilst being completely tempting for nearby canines.

I love that I can recognize most of the ingredients right off the bat without having to look them all up, and the first two ingredients are lamb, and beef broth.

Other great things about this food?
  • No artificial ingredients
  • Grass fed lamb raised without hormones or antibiotics
  • NO grain, corn, soy, wheat or gluten

Thank you Chewy for the great treat this Howl-O-Ween!!!

"For me?"
Dante and Ziva didn't even have to work for it this year, unless of course you count playing with their puppy cousin.

Do The Wave!

The Wave Curved
Cat Scratcher!
"We sere sent this Kitty Scratcher from Chewy.com in exchange for an honest review. Dz Dogs only supports products that we feel are relevant to our readers. This blog contains no affiliate links, all thoughts and opinions are our own."

CAUTION KITTY TEMPORARY TAKE OVER!

This month Chewy sent us a fun new scratcher for Belle! At first I think she was a bit puzzled by the wave shape, but then she really got into the spirit of the scratch.

She super loves catnip, and this scratcher came with a bag of North American grown catnip. After licking off of the cardboard what she could, then she sat down to purr and scratch.

Scratching places for cats are a great way to protect your household furniture, by creating a favorite location to scratch you can potentially save that antique couch your grandma gave you. On top of having two favorite scratch locations that we reload with catnip, I also keep Belle's nails typically trimmed a chore that she has never seemed to mind. She loves to be handled so it's kind of like kitty spa time at our house, followed of course by freeze dried fishy treats.

We hope your kitties love this scratcher as much as she did!

Thank you Chewy!

Why Use Seresto?

Seresto Dog Flea & Tick Collars

"We were sent this Seresto collar from Chewy.com in exchange for an honset review. Dz Dogs only supports products that we feel are relevant to our readers. This blog contains NO affiliate links, all thoughts and opinions are our own."

Can you see it?

It's the small thing grey band hiding under Dante's orange water collar. That's his Seresto collar!

What is a Seresto Collar?
To sum it up simply: Seresto is a lice, flea and tick collar for both cats and dogs it also aids in the treatment and control of sarcoptic mange.

But it's way more than that. We've done the messy liquid flea meds and I hate them with a passion of all passions. It was messy, it was stinky, and it left a grease slick on the back of the dogs spine that lasted waaaaayyyy toooo long. It also got on everything, and usually after greasing it down the back of my dogs spines they would shake, and then it got all over everything including me. Thus this process was left to the outdoors only even in the winter it meant having the pups hang on the back deck until I was sure they weren't going to send it spraying all over my living room.

Ziva with her Seresto.
We also tried different brands, and nothing seemed to really stop the ticks when we would go hiking. And trust me I've tried the natural methods too. Different topical essential oil sprays, I've tried rubbing dryer sheets on the dogs, natural herbal wipes, and praying to the tick gods to make them go away! Maybe my dogs just taste that good though...

Initially I was worried Seresto would cost more, but on the contrary it's a better deal. At least it is if you go to Chewy.com

Seresto lasts 8 months and costs $52.24 if you put it on autoship, which we've done so that it arrives every 8 months when I need to replace it. Whereas Frontline which we tried, costs $59.84 on autoship and only has 6 months worth of medicine.

And from our experience it works!

See his Seresto?
What do we like about Seresto?
- It's clean! No more nasty stinky greasy mess on your dogs back.

- It's waterproof, though swimming with it regularly does reduce the life of the collar. Usually we take it off when we go swimming or take a bath. But you don't have to!

- It's pretty safe. Every pet parent must make their own decisions about meds and treatments, but our vet likes Seresto and said that my dog could eat the collar and would end up sick from the plastic not from the medicine. Consult with your personal veterinarian about your pet, this is what works for us.

- It is a slow time released med that is absorbed through the skin, however just being in contact with the collar isn't enough to cause concern. That being said however it is recommended that small children limit contact the first day or so after putting on a brand new collar.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency - Source Here

Since using Seresto we've definitely noticed a decline in ticks that actually attach to the dogs. Sometimes the ticks still bite, but usually they are dead when we find them and they fall right off. Occasionally we have to pull one out, but it's loads better than before. This is definitely our favorite way to fight ticks. And usually I can tuck the seresto underneath their collars for pictures, sometimes though we just take them temporarily off.

Thank you Chewy! We love our collars!

Dr.Tim's Natural Clean Tripe!

Dr. Tim's Freeze Dried Treats
Natural Clean Tripe!

"We were sent Dr. Tim's treats from Chewy.com in exchange for an honest review. Dz Dogs only supports products that we feel are relevant to our readers. This blog contains no affiliate links, all thoughts and opinions are our own."

Who doesn't love tripe! Well...me for one, it's usually stinky. The dogs on the other hand super love it! In fact Dante put himself in a sit stay hoping - as I left the room with the bag - that I would come back and reward him.  Dz Dad was laughing so hard about it that I did indeed give in to his big brown puppy dog eyes and go back to give Dante a treat.

"Mom can't possibly say no to these eyes..."
What we love about these treats?

- 100% Freeze Dried Tripe, USDA inspected beef tripe from Wisconsin.
- Made in the USA in Wisconsin! We love to support US product when we can.
- Mess free and easy to break apart for training purposes.
- Scent free? Well, I can't smell it but the dogs certainly can.
- Re-closeable bag.

What would we change?
 - NOTHING -

The dogs happily work for these treats, they are definitely going on my list of must haves for high value rewards like recalls at night during potty time, and whenever someone else is house-sitting the dogs for us.  Dante and Ziva have become a bit accustomed to some of their other regular treats so I plan on hoarding this bag for a while and only pulling it out on special occasions when I really want to get their attention.

Sweet and simple we love these treats!

Health Extension Elk Antlers

Elk Antler Chews!

"We were sent Health Extension Elk Antlers from Chewy.com in exchange for an honest review. Dz Dogs only supports products that we feel are relevant to our readers. This blog contains NO affiliate links, all thoughts and opinions are our own."

Best treat ever!

It's been a month and so far the Dz pups have not finished off these treats. Instead, they seem to enjoy leisurely chewing. Rolling their eyes back, and savoring the antlers slowly as well as proudly carrying their prize through the house showing it off to anyone who pays attention.

While these treats are not cheap, they are all natural high quality USA antlers from free range elk.

Why antlers?
  • Antlers don't splinter.
  • Digestible, and high in iron, glucosamine, potassium, and calcium.
  • Long lasting and odor free.
  • These antlers were naturally shed and came from free range US elk.
Things To Note.
Depending on who you ask you're going to hear conflicting things regarding the safety of giving antlers to your dogs. Some dogs have been known to crack a tooth on such a hard chewing object, so this is definitely something to consider before giving one to your dog. If you have any concerns check in with your veterinarian. Dante and Ziva like to gently chew these and take their time, they don't seem to just CHOMP down so I'm not too worried about it. I wouldn't however give these to an aggressive chewer, that could definitely make for a cracked or broken tooth.

But like any chew toy, always make sure you supervise your dog and definitely remove/throw it away when it gets small enough to swallow whole.

I love these, they've been a great break for me! I haven't had to purchase any chews all month, and I'm curious as to how long they will last. I'll keep you posted!

Thank you Chewy.com!!

Coastal Pups!

Mama's Vacation Buddies

Coast trip? Yes please!!

Sadly Dz Dad wasn't able to make it due to work, however that didn't stop us from going anyways. A family reunion at the coast sounded like a nice getaway from it all. From all the smoke that is.

There is normally a mountain right there...
The first night we camped on the Oregon Coast, it wasn't as restful of a sleep as I would have liked. When we first arrived at our campsite that we reserved online we discovered a woman there. The hosts forgot to put up our reservation sign so she thought it was available. To be nice we decided since she was on her own, and it was just myself with Dante and Ziva we opted to share the site and try to make new friends. She was good company for most of the evening, until she got through a whole bottle of wine and half a bottle of whisky BY HERSELF. I don't mind a drink before bed, but I've long ago decided that I'm too old to deal with the repercussions and hangovers from a night of heavy drinking.  After that I was left tending to a stranger and wishing that I had taken the opportunity to kick her out of my campsite when I had first arrived. Live and learn though right?

Being that we don't camp very often the dogs were up most of the night. Any tiny noise and Dante would make a quiet "boof" under his breathe. It's a noise kind of like an old man muttering to himself. Then Ziva would growl softly, I would "shhhhhh" them both and like clockwork every couple hours Ziva would get up and check on me by shoving her wet nose into my face.

It was a long night, and a very early morning. The dogs decided they were up at 5:30 am, I convinced them to wait until 6 before a very frustrated mama finally got up.

We then snuck out of camp I didn't want to wake my strange and obnoxious camp mate. Next order of business was coffee, and hitting the beach before my family was up and ready to meet for breakfast.

What a beautiful first morning though!! Clear blue skies, light breeze, and of course no one was on the beach at 6 in the morning.

Despite the lack of sleep, our family reunion was a lot of fun, and Saturday night when I was offered an RV to stay in with the dogs I jumped at the chance.

Sunday morning was another gorgeous day, a bit overcast on the coast but as soon as we got into town it was sunny and clear. It was a great way to exercise the dogs, they've been getting cabin fever since I won't let them run around like maniacs in the smoke.

We're definitely going to do this trip again! Hopefully soon and with Dz Dad. But I had a lot of fun camping by myself with the dogs, something that I haven't done before. And it was a great experience I certainly wouldn't mind if I had to go by myself again. Biggest takeaway from this weekend? No sharing campsites with random strangers in the future. All I need are my dogs, they are way better company.

Blue Sizzlers!

Blue Buffalo Sizzlers
"We were sent Blue Buffalo Sizzlers in exchange for an hones review. Dz Dogs only supports products we feel are relevant to our readers. This blog contains NO affiliate links, all thoughts and opinions are our own."
This was a big hit this month with the Dz Dogs! The first ingredient being pork, and containing no chicken by-products, no corn/wheat/or soy, no artificial colors or flavors they loved it.

Although we usually stick to freeze dried treats with fewer ingredients this was a fun goody to add into the mix, kind of like a doggy appropriate candy bar. These treats smelled wonderful, broke apart easily into smaller bites, and Dante was more than happy to come running when called knowing that they were in my pocket.

Look what we received in the mail! Too small to be a dog treat...kind of looks like a jewelry bag. And just in time for Ziva's birthday!

When we were contacted by Silver Paws to test out their beautiful dog tags we jumped at the chance. Look at how beautiful they are!

Made in Maine, USA and started in 2010 - Silver Paw Pet Tags was inspired by two adventure dogs named Ruby and Jet who suffered from the same problem we suffer from. A sense of style and a rough and tumble high adventure lifestyle which sadly many tags don't hold up well to.

Either the contact info wears off, the tag turns black, or the loop wears through and snaps off.

Freeze dried food is one of our most favorite things!! We are always happy to try different brands, some brands are 100% freeze dried protein that may be mixed with freeze dried veggies and or fruits, and some like Stewart Raw Naturals is actually a mix of ingredients that is blended together and then freeze dried to provide a complete and balance meal.

Food Toppers! - Instinct

Food Toppers!
Part 2

"We were sent Instinct from Chewy.com in exchange for an honest review. Dz Dogs only supports products that we feel are relevant to our readers. This blog contains NO affiliate links, all thoughts and opinions are our own."

Why use food toppers?
When we travel, like recently when we visited family for Easter. Probably due to stress and excitement, Dante and Ziva tend to skip meals. Being an overbearing mama I hate it when they do this, although it's pretty normal having lived with them for so long. One great way I've figured out to get them to eat, is to entice them with a yummy treat...healthy of course, no junk food or people food. And freeze dried toppers have become a staple in our pantry, they fit the bill! A little bit on top of the pups regular food and BOOM next thing you know they've licked their bowls clean and are begging for more. Literally.

This time we tried -
Instinct by Natures Variety
Raw Boost Mixers
Beef Recipe

If you've been paying attention you will remember that Ziva is intolerant to beef....oops. I'm a goof that was totally my fault for getting the wrong protein. So we kept it to a minimum...shhhhhh...don't tell her that Dante got more!!

They come in a variety of protein options so don't make the same mistake that I did.

What we liked about Instinct Raw Boost -
  • Made from raw, whole food ingredients that were minimally processed to maintain nutritional value. They are freeze dried for longevity of course, so they keep a long time!
  • Smell's great, and no mess!
Which of course makes it easy to give as a treat during training time.
  • Made with a single protein source, organ meat, and a variety of fruits as well as vegetables. For a healthy variety.
  • Made in the USA, all natural ingredients with no corn/wheat/soy/by products/ or artificial colors or preservatives.
This is definitely a great topper, we only use a small handful with each meal so one bag went a long ways in our house!
