Exploring Oregon's Backroads

Let's Go on an Adventure!!

Ever had one of those mornings where you just wake up and feel like an adventure?

Last Saturday was one of those days, being cooped up all week thanks to the rain certainly didn't help with the cabin fever. So we decided to get out and make the best of it!  After tossing around a few ideas we decided rain or shine today would be a beach trip day! Dz Dog Dad got a sparkle in his eye and said, "I've got an idea!! You pack the car!"

His grand idea was to take the back roads all the way to the coast! By back roads I should mention he meant four-wheeling and taking National Forest Service roads...something I had never done but a favorite hobby of his.

Trip essentials....
  • Installed our new Kurgo seat cover!
  • Lots of towels, the Oregon Coast tends to be pretty wet.
  • Coats
  • A couple gallons of water.
  • First aid kit.
  • Emergency car kit.
  • Lunch/Snacks
  • Coffee for the road!
  • Map of the area.
  • Dog gear
    • Doggy coats
    • Leashes plus one extra (just in case).
    • Poo bags
    • A couple tennis balls for Ziva/Dante's Kong toy
    • A days worth of dog food just in case.
And we were off!!

I'll admit I was bit skeptical. Our car is a nice Toyota Rav4, and the last thing I want to do it hurt it. *I'm a bit of a worry wort.*  But we were all packed and prepped in case something happened, hubby assured me that we wouldn't get lost, and I got to be the navigator for the trip!  So after finishing my coffee, and a bunch of bumping around - I cranked up the music and had a blast!

We found some fun places to stop and run the dogs which of course they loved!

And we saw a ton of beautiful waterfalls thanks to all the rain we've been having!

We did not get lost, HOORAY! And we didn't get stuck, another bonus.  But we did run into some closed/locked gates which was a bummer. On a good note though their were tons of trails so we were able to find our way around.

Here is another little #FunRuiner we came across...darn tree was blocking the road!

We forgot our hatchet or we could have chopped through it!

It took us twice as long going forest service roads as it would have if we had taken the main road, but it was worth it for all of the beautiful forest we were able to see.

In the late afternoon after following some lazy rivers we finally made it into Winchester Bay, and seriously if you love chowder, freshly baked cinnamon rolls, sourdough bread, and fresh scallops we highly recommend you swing by this tiny Oregon town! It's hard to go wrong in picking a restaurant, they are all so good and fresh!

Plus you have beach access!!

On the Oregon Coast it's considered busy if you can see another person, hahaha!
We saw a couple other people, and a few other dogs. But thankfully everyone was well mannered and stayed with their families, and we had tons of space to spread out and enjoy a nice section of beach all to ourselves.

I should mention, I'm super serious about leashes.  If Dante or Ziva are not in a listening mood then they do not have any off-leash privileges.

So Dante spent some of the time on leash until I was convinced he was going to be a good boy and recall if I asked him to. We play lots of Recall Training Games - you can see more about this HERE and I like to practice in different places, the beach made for a great new high distraction environment for Dante and Ziva. Dante struggles a bit more with recall, but thanks to flyball and lots of practice, his focus has been improving!

Needless to say it was a quiet drive home, as the dogs were completely exhausted.
Dz Dog dad though is thrilled because i'm now hooked! It was soo much fun taking the backroads, especially being able to go as a family. Maybe a Jeep is in our future?

I encourage the dogs to drink the water I bring them to avoid giardia issues. #BeenThereDoneThat

"Awww mom, not in public!!"
