Friday Trick Challenge!
Weeks 1 & 2
As part of our New Year Resolutions we joined a trick group on Facebook! If you want to check it out, the group is called "2016 Dog Trick Challenge".
Well actually we joined two different trick groups but i'm doing the best in this one so far, haha! I think I was a bit too ambitious. But what I love about being in the trick group is that it is the perfect way to keep me accountable to working Dante and Ziva's brains, and using my 101 Dog Tricks book by Kyra Sundance.
I've decided to turn this into a weekly Friday series for us, I hope you come back every week to see what new thing we've learned!

Week 2 is "crawl" - I got a bit behind on the training for this week, but Ziva's almost got it! Dante on the other hand is not a fan of this trick so we're trying a different approach to see if I can engage him, I'll keep you posted if it works!
The second group I mentioned that we joined is a group to help people get their Novice Trick Title in a month, it's hard because they have four different tricks a week to master plus a bonus! That's five in case you wanted to know, ha!
I'm not doing a great job setting aside that much time to working on these tricks....we did ok for week one though. Week one was, "touch", spin right & left, "beg" or "sit pretty", and "play dead" or "bang" as we call it.
Dante "beg" -
Ziva "beg" and "bang!" -
Ziva "clock" clockwise turn, and "counter" counterwise turn -
Dante doing "clock" and "counter" -
Stay Tuned!! Week 3 uses props!
I love seeing these! The Heroic Sparks group is definitely keeping me busy. Ruby already knew everything from Week 1 but Week 2 we had a lot to work on. I haven't even started on 'Roll out the Carpet' although we did a little with it a while back so we'll see if she remembers! We are having the hardest time with Peekaboo since we've worked on weaves and figure 8s. Ruby doesn't like to stay still or even move slowly. Everything is lightning speed! That's the same trouble we've had with Crawl - she just launches herself across the floor. Ziva moves so carefully!
ReplyDeleteDante doesn't move at all! :-) It's so funny. I'm going to keep working on this one, and the carpet roll out one next. Ruby is so darn cute, I love her energy!
DeleteLots of tricks and training. Awesome work! Looks like you all are having fun doing it too.
ReplyDeleteIt is fun!
DeleteEXCELLENT! I love the little vids - they are doing great. Can't wait to see new tricks each week. They will be ready for America's Got Talent!
ReplyDeleteThanks Slim!! Got to exercise the brain too! :-)
DeleteLove these! I just joined the tricks group on Facebook! Now off to find a prop! Thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeleteYay!!
DeleteGreat job! Nola's favorite trick is spin (counter clockwise); we're working on going the other direction. I need to teach crawl! Ziva is so cute doing it, and Dante spinning is adorable. Thanks for sharing the group name - just requested to join!
ReplyDeleteSide note: I love your Luv a Bull leash rack!
Thanks so much! I made the leash rack over the summer. :-) Can't wait to see your tricks!
DeleteThis looks like a lot of fun! I should really do something like this with Barley, too. She knows a lot of tricks already, but it would be fun to start on something a little more ambitious.
ReplyDeleteYou totally should!
DeleteSuper excellent - I just loved this post and the videos!! Great tricks - we may have to try a few!
ReplyDeleteYay! We like inspiring others to try new things!
DeleteWhat an excellent job! Everyone looks terrific.
ReplyDeleteI've started doing trick training with Honey while we're getting the boat hauled out for the latest repair (an unfortunately common event). :)
You noted that Dante wasn't too fond of crawling. When do you decide to give up on a trick one of the dogs doesn't enjoy?
I tried to teach Honey to roll over. She was having none of it. But now I try to capture it naturally when she's rolling on the grass. I think it's only a matter of time until she's rolling on cue.
With Dante I haven't given up on the trick just yet, but it does mean getting creative to see what works for him. I'm going to see if I can get him to crawl under a chair and then work on cueing it later. :-)
DeleteYay for trick training! Can you put together a "how to" for playing dead/bang?! I'd love to teach that one!!
ReplyDeleteI think we could do that!
DeleteI love it! I want to do some kind of challenge like this once we get our house sold and settled into a new place. Right now I'm kind of hit or miss with the trick training - and I've just finally got Luke to go the other way on his spin. I'm interested in how to train crawl...I have a hard time believing we could accomplish that one! I'm going to enjoy following along with you. Sometimes I run out of ideas for new things...I might have to get that book too!
ReplyDeleteJan, Wag 'n Woof Pets
The book is awesome! Definitely check it out, I think i'll put together a "how to" post soon!
DeleteBest of luck with the trick training.
ReplyDeleteGreat Job Ziva dn Dante!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jill!!!
