"What's this? A box? And I'm pretty sure it's for me, so don't go getting any ideas."

"We were sent Victor dog food in exchange for an honest review. Dz Dogs only supports brands and products that we feel are relevant to our readers. This blog contains no affiliate links, all thoughts and opinions are our own."

As most of you know we like to feed a rotating diet of high quality grain free kibbles, we also like to make mealtime fun by adding food toppers or goodies like coconut oil, eggs, fish oil, broths, occasional meat, and even some yummy canned food!

Victor Lamb & Rice Formula Canned Food
This month Chewy.com sent us Victor Super Premium, Lamb and Rice canned food to try.

Ingredients
The first thing we always check is the ingredient list, we were thrilled to see lamb, vegetable broth, and lamb liver as the top three ingredients. Yumm! Being a canned food it has a bit more ingredients than we usually go for, but we don't use it as a regular diet item (it's a treat in this house) so we weren't to concerned.

A couple ingredients to note:

- Dicalcium Phosphate, is used to add texture to pet foods.
- Guar Gum,Cassia Gum, Carrageenan, thickening agents for wet food.
- Sodium Tripolyphosphate, is a preservative and dental additive to help keep teeth clean by reducing tartar buildup.

These ingredients that I've noted are controversial among pet parents, ultimately its up to you what you feed your dog. Since we feed our pups what we believe to be a healthy rotating diet and wet food isn't a staple for us, we don't see it as a problem so long as it's just an occasional treat. Kind of like us humans enjoying an occasional fried food or candy bar.

Oh The Fun You Can Have With Canned Food!
Canned food is great for when silly me forgets to pick up additional dog food after coming back home from a trip into town. We also like using it as a fun frozen treat!

Canned Dog Food Treats!
As much as the Dz Dogs love canned food placed straight into their bowls, their are other ways to enjoy your canned food.

- One of our favorite ways to enjoy canned food is to stuff it into a Kong and freeze it for a fun boredom buster!

- Rolled into bite sized balls and frozen.

- Or even baked into doggy biscuits!

Easy Canned Food Baked Biscuits
  • 13.2 ounce can of wet dog food in our case the Victor Lamb and Rice formula!
  • About 2 cups of your favorite grain free flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. of baking powder
  • 1 Cup of cooked and pureed vegetables (optional)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Lightly grease a cookie sheet. In a large bowl combine all of the ingredients, mix thoroughly. Scoop out into 1-inch balls, place on the cookie sheet and press flat with a fork.
Bake for 15 - 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool before serving, and store in the fridge!

*If you want a crunchier treat, cook at 200 degrees for about 4 hours, then turn off the oven and allow to cool overnight before serving.

*Instead of pureed veggies you can substitute 1 cup of UNSWEETENED applesauce.
*If your canned dog food is extra wet, you'll need to add a bit more flour until it has a cookie doughy consistency.

If you want to enjoy Victor Super Premium Canned Food, you can find it online at Chewy.com on sale for just $28.99 for a case of 12. And if your pet has allergies make sure to check out their other flavor options such as Beef & Vegetable, Chicken & Vegetable, Turkey & Sweet Potato, Chicken and Rice, and of course our favorite Lamb & Rice!

  3. I think it's pawsome that you talked about the controversial ingredients. The K9 equivalent of a human fried indulgence once a month or so isn't so bad ;-) LOVE that you're into making frozen KONG goodies too. They really are great boredom busters and keep the pups busy when we have to adult!

    1. Boredom busters are the best!! Can't wait for summer when the pups can just enjoy being out in a fenced in yard for a while. :-)

  4. I love how you approached this! We use toppers for food and I've been questioning whether canned food is a good idea. Looking at it as a special occasional treat is great; instead of giving it up completely. After all, I don't deny myself yummy things that aren't good for me ALL the time!
